Memphis is full of amazing moms: working moms, stay-at-home moms, single moms, moms of multiples, etc. We want to highlight some of those moms! Each month we will feature one special mom as MMB’s mom of the month.
Melanie Pyron, LMT is an energetic and artistic single mom, and our November Mom of the Month! She and her 7 year old son, Oscar, love to spend weekends in creative play, painting, cooking, studying, and making epic drawings. A native of Arkansas, Melanie moved first moved to Memphis in 1998. During this time she became a licensed massage therapist (2001) and a certified Pilates instructor (2004). After continuing studies in England, Germany, Spain, California, and Costa Rica, she returned to Memphis in 2010 to teach Pilates and movement therapies at New Ballet Ensemble. Teaching dancers from the ages of 10 years and up, she diversified her skills and knowledge in massage therapy, Pilates, Gyrotonics, yoga, and life!
In 2012, the birth of her son slowed work life down to a simmer. Mom-life took over. Luckily, Oscar was a great sleeper! This gave her lots of time to spend on other things she loves, like organic gardening, cooking, painting, taking online continuing education classes, and reading.
In 2018, with Oscar older and much more active, Mel joined the amazing team of healthcare professionals at Sundara Wellness Center in the Medical District. There she runs group Pilates Reformer, Tower, and Mat Classes and also works one-on-one with clients pre-and-post natal, therapeutically, and with all types of mammas!
What will the future bring? She is sharing with her son as much as she can and last year she enrolled in college with the goal of becoming a physical therapist. Yeehaw!
We asked Melanie:
1. What is it like being a mom and having a full time job?
Being a mom and working full-time while also going back to college is pretty demanding. However, my priority is making sure Oscar has plenty of time to have fun. Often he misses out on certain activities because I have to work. I also try to keep our nightly routine as consistent as possible, and that really helps. The most supportive thing for me is that his school has a wonderful aftercare program!
