Teresa contributor

Teresa Leary Jenkins, Ed.D., is a Tennessee transplant by way of Rhode Island, Virginia, Wisconsin, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina. This busy Mom keeps up with her two kids (September 1999 and February 2007), along with two fur babies, Sammy and Brandi Lou. Teresa enjoys parenting her two kiddos and loves to share her parenting journey with other Moms. Once upon a time, Teresa blogged under the name “Musing Mom,” and she also wrote for a local parenting magazine. She is a graduate of Spelman College, the University of Chicago, and the University of Memphis (twice). Her dissertation research focused on the schooling experience of Black female students at private schools around the country. Her motto, “service is the rent we pay for living” is from her mentor, Dr. Marian Wright Edelman. She is currently presenting her research at conferences, writing a book, and trying to make a difference in her six inches on this earth. Teresa loves all things Memphis, especially the culture and food.

Born and raised in Bahrain but culturally Indian, Shirley has made Memphis home for 14 years now. She’s been married for 17 years to her American Navy veteran, currently employed by Fedex, and they have 6 kids together : Aaliyah ( November 2004), Ari (July 2006), Anushka (July 2009), Abigail (November 2011), Annie (August 2015) and Amelia (February 2018) . She spends her time raising her kids, and she has a passion for Bodybuilding, coffee, and {of course} all kinds of food. One of her greatest accomplishments is learning how to cook Southern food; it makes her soul happy? Being a mom has been a challenging but transforming journey in her life and she’s embracing every moment. You will usually find her out on the baseball fields or volleyball courts cheering on her kids; if you see her, come say, “Hi!”

mel contributor

Southern Arkansas pine forests run through her veins, but Melanie loves to disappear in foreign cities.  Memphis is the perfect mix of urban wood and she has loved it’s unpretentious grit since she first moved to midtown in 1998.  Now a single mom of  first grader, Oscar (2012), she strives to balance her love of cooking Southern food from scratch with homework and bedtime. During the workday, she is blessed to be practicing in the field of comprehensive movement and massage therapy which is currently motivating her towards a degree in Kinesiology. In her downtime, which is rare, she enjoys painting and making crafty stuff with her son.

Kristi was born and raised in Chicago but calls Memphis her home. She lives in Collierville with her husband, Jesse, and three kids – Levi (June 2012), Sam (May 2014), and Halle June (March 2016). Her husband lost his left eye in combat while in Iraq with the U.S. Army in 2007; because of that, she tries to treat every single day like a gift. She is a work-from-home mom, providing online nutrition and fitness coaching to hundreds of clients while juggling a threenager. She loves to talk all things enneagram (she’s a 4w3), faith, family, and fitness. On a good day you can find her on the tennis court or scouring the city for the best coffee shop. If she’s not there check the laundry room – she’s probably waist-deep inside the washing machine.
