Hey! I’m Laura, also known as LB, and I have lived just right outside of Memphis in Tipton County my entire life. I am from the tiny of town of Brighton, TN. Yes, we actually have quite a few traffic lights now (unlike when I was growing up). My husband is from the same small hometown, and we actually met in kindergarten. Does that sound creepy if I say he was the cutest kindergartner I’ve ever seen? Oh well, he was. We started dating while in college at the University of Memphis when we found out we had mutual friends, and they both invited us to the same party in hopes of rekindling that old flame from 16 years earlier. It was love at second sight. All it took was one look at that long, shaggy college boy hair, and I was head over heels. We were inseparable, and he was the best part of actually going to class. My GPA thanks him. Fast forward a year and a half and we decided to add to our family by picking out the cutest little Yorkie I had ever seen. Yep, that was my firstborn furbaby named Spike. I named Spike after my husband’s hairstyle when he was in kindergarten. We all do embarrassing things when we’re young, right?! A year later we got married right here in Memphis and were living the good life of me attempting to cook, which basically just involved me following directions on the back of a Stouffer’s pot pie box. Ah, newlywed bliss. A few months later, we decided we were missing out on a little girl in our life, so we picked out Lola, our second little furbaby, who they described as having a teddy bear face. Our furbaby family was finally complete.
Fast forward another 6 years, and Shane owned his own business, and I decided to go back to the U of M to get my Master’s degree while working full-time in the corporate world. It was the hardest thing I had ever done, or so I thought. After trying to get pregnant for 7 years, I finally made the spur of the moment decision to go see an infertility specialist. Only 2 months later, one IVF round and dozens of tries of giving myself shots in the stomach and butt, I was pregnant, and I couldn’t believe it. Shane actually didn’t believe it either–not until I was 6 weeks pregnant, and we both heard the heartbeat. That little egg that turned into an embryo is now a 16 month old blonde hair and blue eyed little girl named Leighton Conner. Remember that comment about the hardest thing I’ve ever done? Yeah, scratch that. The hardest thing I’ve ever done is motherhood. I know I don’t have to tell y’all that, though. What I didn’t know is that it would be even more amazing, loving, challenging, time consuming and rewarding than I ever thought. I never thought I could have this much love in my heart and have a little piece of me and my husband running around the house blowing kisses to us. I feel like I was so close to not even calling the doctor that day and making an appointment and missing out on the “motherhood club” all together.
I now spend my days working full-time as a credit manager with some traveling in Texas and Oklahoma throughout the summer and fall. I also am a style and lifestyle blogger over at Walking in Memphis in High Heels. When I’m not working during the day or blogging during Leighton’s naptime on the weekends, you can usually find us outdoors. I never really thought of myself as an “outdoorsy” person until my husband and I got together, but we developed this passion for the outdoors together. Thank goodness, Leighton was born with it in her genes too! We love to be outdoors running 5Ks, 10Ks or half marathons, riding the MS150 mile bike rides each year or even doing a little hiking. I love that Memphis is a great city for all of this. It is home to one of the largest urban parks in the country, Shelby Farms, and the park has basically been our second home over the years. Now that we are parents, our second home is quickly being replaced by the Memphis Zoo and the Children’s Museum too.
I’m so excited to be a part of Memphis Moms Blog and be able to share my love for my city and motherhood.
