We’ve all been there. You waste precious time scrolling Pinterest in search of the perfect poses, spend hours getting yourself and your family ready, shell out a few hundred dollars, and spend another hour smiling into the camera. Then, you end up disappointed with the results. I’m a firm believer that it takes time to find a photographer whose style matches your vision, whose personality meshes with yours, all while maintaining quality, affordability, and close proximity. It’s not always easy.

I’ve worked with a number of photographers during my adult life: from engagement, bridal, wedding, and anniversary, to maternity, birth, newborn, and family photos. There were photographers I was immensely pleased with, and others who I wasn’t. Most recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a local Memphis photographer who I want to rave about for a few minutes.

Meet Emily, owner of Emily B. Photography. She’s kind of awesome.

She’s lived in Memphis since 2003, and currently resides in Arlington. Emily is a wedding and portrait photographer, specializing in newborn portraits. In 2013, she was able to focus on Emily B. Photography full-time: shooting on the weekends and editing during the week while staying home with her children. Emily is a mother of 4 boys (ages 12, 9, 2, and 2 months), so you could say she knows a thing or two about kids!

I met her back in the summer, when she took Madison’s 6 month pictures. We scheduled our session at 6am on a Saturday morning– when the lighting would be the prettiest. Begrudgingly, my husband and I agreed (yes, we had to wake at 4am!). The day before the shoot, Emily texted me and said that she’d gotten up at 6 that morning to check the lighting– now that’s dedication! She was so sweet with Madison and patiently tolerated my crazy mama moments of fixing her headband so that the bow sat just right and pulling her dress down to cover her diaper every other shot. And even at 6 months pregnant, she wasn’t afraid to roll around in the dew-soaked grass for that perfect shot. As it turned out, Emily was totally right- the lighting was GORGEOUS and her images are so beautiful. She captured Madison’s personality perfectly!

We enlisted her talent again last month for family photos. Included in our family are our two rambunctious dogs. They’re actually quite embarrassing when taken in public– they don’t like to sit still or obey any commands, and bark uncontrollably. Before our session, I warned Emily about their impending behavior but she promised me we’d get a photo with them one way or another. Believe it or not, she was able to capture the perfect family photo! She got two dogs AND a baby to look at the camera! Now, that’s impressive!

Emily suggested dropping leaves during the photo on the right. I love how it turned out!

Photographing my family or me probably isn’t an easy task. I’ve very particular, have my own ideas for poses, and generally am kind of a control freak. She handles all of that with such grace and patience, and has fun suggestions, brings cute props, and is awesome at capturing in-the-moment shots that you’ll treasure forever.

So, naturally, when I found out that she had agreed to take our head shots for our contributors for Memphis Mom Blog, I was so excited! I knew she’d be the perfect fit for the kind of photos we were looking for. If you’ve ever had individual photos taken, you know how awkward it can be. Often, head shots can look stiffly posed and, well, just awkward. Emily did an excellent job of making us laugh and relax, which is reflected in our photos. Emily was so sweet to take time out of her day to help us out free of charge and we’re so thankful for her generosity!
